BobSagget wrote: I mentioned it earlier in the thread when someone asked this same thing and someone said no, but I have gotten the $25 referral credit 4 different times ($100 in total) with signing up for these $99/yr prepaid plans.

My original sign up when I used someone else's referral, then when I signed up 2 family members using my referral and then an RFD'er who PM'd me requesting to use my referral as well. $25 for each one. Every referral was for a $99/yr prepaid plan.

You can use the referral after you've already signed up and your line is active. You just go to the referral link of the specific person you want to get credit for referring you and input your name/email and freedom phone number and within a few days both of you should get the $25 in your top-up balance.

The referral condition on their website states that the plan must be a min. of $25 each month so the prepaid plans should not qualify. Did you get a referral lately? The referring may have changed since or you got lucky.

See the insert from their website.

I am on prepaid -- pay per use and I have around $30 balance on my account. I popped up $70 and got my service activated
Also got a postpaid line switched via loyalty department. These two lines were switched via different agents

I chatted yesterday and got nowhere and was also connected with the loyalty rep. The agent from loyalty can changed the plan but I have to pay $99 for the change. Since, my autonew was in Aug., I would lose that original $99 plan that I paid for only 3 months of use. I did not go for it and will hope this plan will be around my next renewal. At least I still have the 1GB bonus Freedom data per month.

Contemplating this Freedom $99/50GB yearly plan.

Am currently on old Freedom $25/3GB monthly plan, but I signed up for Virgin $25/20GB 15-month plan over Black Friday and am waiting for their SIM card to be delivered.

Would I be on the hook with Virgin and its $50 activation fee if I haven't received nor activated their SIM card nor ported my Freedom number over yet?

I want to share my experience with you guys and gals. I've been on the prepaid $99 plan (no data) for almost three years.
Freedom's voice/messaging service is very reliable however I do travel around Ontario a few times a year and experienced dead zones.
A few times I had to make a call/text and had no service. It was not a deal breaker for me since I have many data plans from Rogers and Bell; their coverage is amazing.

Their online top up service is not reliable, and I had to actually go to the store to top up. I also experienced having my phone number ported to another person's account when I started the prepaid service. It was actually very dangerous since someone could have accessed my personal information and passwords with my phone number. It was fixed by going to a store the day after however was not an experience I want anyone to go through.

FYI I just signed up for Virgins $45/50GB plan and leaving Freedom for now.

No.
The $129 nationwide plan with no data works outside the freedom network.
The $99 50GB and $89 no data only works in the freedom zone.

Because it's more about value than dollar budget. I'd rather get a $1,000 value phone for $300 than a $500 value phone for $200.

Anyways what about Essential PH-1 and/or Moto G6 and/or Moto Z3 Play. Are those any good?

Where is the best deal for it?

I know for the black Friday deals carriers were giving away the pixel 6a for free but not sure if that's still going on.

As a result there's an influx of them on rfd/kijiji for 300-400

Question.. when signing up, do I need to call my previous provider to cancel, or does the process of porting out my phone number indirectly cancel my other plan? (currently on Lucky mobile month to month).

Doesn't matter. A few years ago, I only have a PYW prepaid line which is $0 month fee. I referred my wife for a $15 tablet line. Both of us got $25 credit.

Don't cancel, when you activate in Freedom tell them your porting your number.

Warning Freedom Mobile is not for everyone sometime it's signal become spoty and if you use and Android phone it's constantly switching from 4G to LTE when your phone in 4g almost cannot make call send txt and data will not work. Unlike Virgin you will be covered by Bell network.

The problem is, if those customers stop paying for their 2 year contract, then also don't pay the big phone balance that becomes due. Then that carrier can blacklist the phone long after you started using it.

That has nothing to do with using an Android phone, with the same conditions an iPhone would do the same.

What DOES sound like what's happening is your phone doesn't have all the bands you need for good FM coverage. I wouldn't bother using a phone that didn't have B13, B4/66, B7 for LTE on FM.

I just called in and switched from a Freedom 250 $20/month plan to the $99 50GB pre-paid plan. The original rep transferred me to loyalty and then she offered me a "better" plan with more data/features for $30. Told her no thanks as I wanted to SAVE money, not spend more and she was like "sure, I understand" and then promptly switched it. No need for porting, arguing, etc.

+1 for this plan.

Yeah, the coverage was my main reason for signing up for the Virgin deal. I visited Quebec for a couple of weeks and ended up paying an extra ~$12 for calls, texts and data usage because Freedom does not have nationwide coverage in that province and as such partners with other networks.
