SCOUTING THE WILDCATS

All but two of the eight teams in this year's College World Series field entered play ranked among the top 20 Division I squads in total home runs. The outliers? NC State, which checked in at No. 33, andKentucky, whichsat at a distant 70th.

The Wildcats' offense is far more dependent on its ability to move runners from station to station via things like bunts and stolen bases (they rank No. 14 in the nation in steals) than it is home runs or extra base hits. And whether or not that old-school style of play holds up in Omaha could be heavily dependent upon whether or not Kentucky's pitching can continue to keep opposing bats at bay, something they've largely been able to doso far, holding their opponents to a combined nine runs in two games, which continued their trend of strong NCAA Tournament play as the entered the College World Series having limited their competition to just three total runs across their last four contests, which included the Super Regional round when they faced No. 15Oregon State.

Success on the mound for Kentucky starts with ace right-handerTrey Pooser, a graduate transfer from College of Charleston who allowed just one earned run on nine hits over his last 19 innings pitched prior to Omaha.

Pooser, who started for the Wildcats on Saturday and could potential be available for Wednesday's games, relies heavily on a sinker-slider combo which has proven incredibly effective this year, especially since joining the Wildcats' rotation March 22. The senior righty has a 3.21 ERA in 70 innings since then.

The Wildcats are starting senior lefty Dominic Niman, who enters play with a 6.24 ERA in 70.2 innings. Opposing teams are batting .274 against him.
