  • 2 14 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

directions

  • Place all ingredients, except tomatoes, in your machine, in the order recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Choose dough cycle. About 5 minutes before the dough cycle ends, add the tomato bits (this keeps the pieces recognizeable).
  • When cycle ends, remove and shape as desired. When shaping, poke any pieces of tomato that stick up under the surface of the dough (the tomato will burn). Place on a cornmeal dusted baking sheet, spray lightly with olive oil. Let rise until doubled.
  • Bake in a 375 deg. preheated oven for about 35 minutes or until bread tests done. (Rolls will be done in 15 or so minutes).

  2. Homemade rolls to swoon for! We made them pull-apart style, served warm with our lentil soup. I'd like to try with more whole-wheat flour, but these were still divine.

  4. This was great! Are there 10 stars somewhere? I didn't have any sun-dried tomatoes, so I just made this a rosemary bread. The color and flavor are fabulous! I bet this would make an excellent dipping bread for flavored olive oil. I made this into a large round loaf, cut in half, scooped out the middle a little bit and added turkey, roast beef, tomato, cheese and lettuce to make a picnic sandwich cut into 4 pieces. This made an ordinary turkey and roast beef sandwich extraordinary!! Thank you soooooo much. I'll be making this often.

  5. This is a very good recipe. I made it into rolls and got 8 of about the size of a baked potato, in fact they quite resemble baked potatoes. I used all-purpose flour and added some gluten powder to give it the strength to make good bread and I love the whole wheat in it. The down side is that the cornmeal scorched and smoked badly on the baking sheet, It smelled like the roll were burning but they turned out perfectly with golden brown bottoms. The only thing I did differently from the recipe was to use fresh minced garlic in place of garlic powder and 1/2 a tsp of sugar (making up the rest of the Tbsp with Splenda). This would make one very fine ham sandwich!

My screen name is a diminutive in Lithuanian for bread, so you won't be suprised to learn that I love to bake bread. In recent years I have been baking a lot of sourdough breads and have several starters sitting in my refrigerator. But I like to cook a lot of other things, as well, especially from various cultures. The cat wishes I would concentrate on meat and fish... I joined a few years ago but started posting recipes and participating in forums just recently - I wish I had done so earlier. Recipezaar is a great community! Right now I am a co-host for the Breads and Baking and the Eastern Europe forums - I hope to see you there!
